Network Performance Management

The nMetrics application and network performance monitoring solution provides full visibility across the network with real-time and historical data.

Availability and event monitoring is available for a range of devices including switches, routers and network interfaces, server devices such as NT or Unix servers; and applications such as email, web and database servers. Devices are monitored via a range of techniques. At the simplest level, a device may be 'pinged' to determine availability, however, individual applications can also be monitored by specifying polling to be undertaken using specific TCP or UDP Port numbers.

More sophisticated availability monitoring is also available to monitor not only when a device fails but also when a specific resource is degraded.

Administrators are alerted by SMS or email when faults occur or thresholds are exceeded. The nMetrics Application Monitor maintains a local database of events and alarms and can also integrate with third-party management systems through delivery of information via SNMP traps.

The event management system provides for delivery of alarms in different formats. Events can be configured to be sent to multiple email addresses dependent upon specific conditions or time-of-day.

Type of Service (ToS) reporting verifies and reports on prioritized network traffic across the WAN both historically and in real time.

Latency reporting provides latency measurements to highlight network delay and application server delay for every conversation throughout the network.

Traditionally, network latency has been difficult to measure with many people resorting to using simple round trip time tools, such as Ping, to provide rudimentary latency measurements. The nMetrics solution takes a passive approach to network and application latency measurement. That is, the Application Monitor simply ‘watches’ traffic and calculates latency per flow based on the inter arrival time of packets. This approach negates the requirement for any dedicated agents generating test traffic, and calculates actual latency based on real user traffic.
